South Australian road users need to make sure they vote for safer roads this election.
Much of the Dukes Highway in South Australia’s South East has undergone safety work. Several sections have been widened, full width paved and given the Wide Centerline Treatment.
Today, as we travelled along one of the newly widened sections, we saw the benefits. An oncoming B-Double Semi ran off the road, almost to the white posts!
Normally this would have been a terrifying and potentially disastrous situation. Today, nothing happened! In one smooth, gentle action the driver simply returned his rig to the road.
If this happened on a narrower section the whole left side would have ‘dropped’ off the edge of the road with rear trailer swinging wildly. We would have been taking evasive action and praying the whole rig didn’t swerve into us.
As it was, we and the Semi driver carried on our way grateful for the new widened sections.
The wider pavement and Centreline treatment is not finished yet. Several sections are much narrower. While we were lucky today, more work is needed.
Make sure your vote means on-going improvement of the roads your family, friends and work-mates use.
